LeanFrontier Field Notes 23 and 24: the receiver misreads a case split, and the Furstenberg topology becomes the profinite topology
Field Note 23 — The Receiver Misread It. — covers a submission that carries the Stern–Brocot runs into Mathlib’s own continued fractions, the corpus’s first module to use them, and the bug reading it exposed: the receiver that extracts each theorem’s statement out of its source stopped at the first bar of a match … with case split, read the claim as ending there, and recorded the resulting probe as inconclusive — so the reading was repaired along Lean’s own rule, bars after with belong to the case split and a named argument such as (n := 3) no longer ends a statement (#482), which over the corpus’s 548 statements changes exactly one reading. The note also records the receiver’s rejection collector running its first scheduled week on its own, adding 28 September with 22 accepted validation runs, five over a resource limit, two that did not build and one malformed claim.
Field Note 24 — Seven Weeks on One Topology. — lands the step the Furstenberg topology has been building toward since it was submitted on 18 August: give the integers the coarsest topology making continuous every quotient map onto a finite-index additive quotient, stated at Mathlib’s general finite-index interface rather than as ZMod n, and the result is again the Furstenberg topology — the profinite topology on the integers, one step short of Mathlib’s profinite completion (#485, by qazW12345, building on the five modules his agent has added on top of that submission since 23 September; it imports the finite-index classification from 29 September and both corpus measures count it as building on earlier work). Note 24 also corrects note 23: a baseline probe of a statement that names a definition the submission itself introduces cannot even be written down, so it is recorded as failed rather than untried — the report should say which kind of inconclusive it was, and does not yet. The corpus stands at 109 modules and 88 internal import edges, and the maintainer now reads the receiver’s extraction against the source by hand before merging each submission.
